Startup AIWAYS puts U5 onto the markets, to unveil U6 at 2020 Geneva Motor Show
Chinese EV startup AIWAYS put its first production model, the U5, onto the market on December 19. Offered in four variants, the U5 is priced between RMB197,900 and RMB292,100. It is going to compete head-on with such models as the Xpeng G3 and the BAIC EX5.
The closed-off grille revealed that this is a battery-powered model. The sculptural headlights coupled with the lower air intakes render a sporty front fascia. Adopting LED technology, the headlamps deliver a preferable lighting effect.
As to the side profile, the sunroof looks floating in the air thanks to the usage of two-tone color scheme, further highlighting the dynamic aesthetics. Sharp waistline runs through the vehicle body, delivering a feeling of steadiness and sturdiness. The five-spoke petal-shaped rims are quite unmistakable.
Larger than both Xpeng G3 and BAIC EX5, the AIWAYS U5 is positioned as a mid-sized SUV, measuring 4,680mm long, 1,865 wide and 1,700mm tall with a wheelbase spanning 2,800mm.
The taillight cluster stretching across the entire tailgate accentuates the car's width. The indent on the tailgate creates a multi-layered stereo perception.
On the inside, the U5 currently offers a tint interior with room for up to five passengers. The 3-screen (4.2''+7''+4.2'') LCD instrument panel and the 12.3'' full LCD with a resolution of 1920*720dpi improve a futuristic sense for the vehicle. Besides, the three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel and the rotary gear selector are part of facilities appealing to young tech-savvy users.
To facilitate users' operation and ensure safety, the U5 production model is outfitted with such amenities as HWA (highway assist), APA (active park assist), TJA (traffic jam assist), etc.
Powering the vehicle is an electric motor that pumps out 125kW and 315 N·m of peak torque, energized by a battery pack with an energy density of 181 Wh/kg. The NEDC-rated range is 503km, and can be increased by 120km by adding extra battery packs.
Following the U5, the startup will unveil the U6, at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show, said Cai Jianjun, executive vice president of AIWAYS. Reportedly, the U6 will be a coupe-like SUV. Moreover, the third model, U7, is set to hit the market in 2021.
